Becoming A Skater

Learn to Skate

In Aussie Skate™, learning focuses on fun, participation and basic skill development. Lessons are in a group format and led by a certified professional coach. Skaters progress at their own pace and coaches make sessions lively using a wide variety of activities that create a fun environment and promote learning.  Aussie Skate™ creates a direct pathway into the competitive field, from Aussie Skate™ Competitions to Club Events to National Championships for Figure Skating.

The Aussie Skate™ (Skate School) is run by Ice Skating Queensland and conducted at Iceworld Acacia Ridge.

Aussie Skate™ is the nationally accredited, learn-to-skate program designed for beginners of all ages.

Figure Skating - Singles

Single Skating is a discipline of figure skating in which male and female skaters compete individually. Men's singles and ladies' singles are both Olympic disciplines and are both governed by the ISU.  Single skaters perform jumps, spins, step sequences, spirals, and other moves in the field to music as part of their competitive programs.

Figure Skating - Pairs

Pairs Skating is distinguished from ice dancing and single skating by elements unique to pair skating, including overhead lifts, twist lifts, death spirals, and throw jumps. They also perform the elements of single skating in unison. Pair Skating requires similar technique and timing on all elements of the performance, as well as practice and trust between the partners. The aim is to create an impression of "two skating as one".

Figure Skating - Ice Dance

Ice Dance is a form of ballroom dancing on the ice where a man and woman skate together and perform a variety of turns, steps, twizzles, spins and lifts. Unlike Pairs Skating, overhead lifts are not permitted.  Another distinctive aspect of ice dance is the particular use of music in the performances. In Ice Dance, dancers must skate to music with a definite beat or rhythm, which brings out the character and flavour of that dance.
